For this exhibition, Mel Jane Wilson has created numerous fabric hangings that drape down within the glass vitrines. Using appliqué, patchwork and quilting techniques, Wilson arranges and transforms various collected and salvaged household linens and dress fabrics into large tactile hangings. Playing with light, space, colour and pattern each fabric assemblage details materials that have been machine stitched, stained and painted with watercolour paint. Often fragmenting, rearranging and repurposing her materials, Wilson is drawn to the unpredictable outcomes in the making process amongst the materials she works with.
